So there where two girls name Mackenzie and Riley they where both in high school and would skip school once a week and that all added up.Riley did not have parents because they died in a car crash when going to the Bahama's on there honey moon and Mackenzie's mom was great friends with Riley's parents so she let Riley move in with her because she knows that they are best friends so she was just trying to be a good mother and so when she got their report card she was so happy and proud of them but when she saw that big number on the right side of the page and it was the number of absents and both of the girls had the same number of absents they told the mother that they have not been absent because her mom would drop them off but......little did her mom know they would stand at the door of the high school to make sure she left and would leave after the mothers conversation with the two girls the girls had a talk and Mackenzie wanted to tell the truth before it got out of hand because when her mom was talking to them she said she was gonna go up to the school and go over it with the principle. She went to the principle of the school and asked about it and she thought that he was being racist because he was white and the two girls and the mom was black she started going off on him and got the girls almost suspended the girls finally discussed and they finally agreed to the truth which got them into so much trouble and the mother had to apologized to the principle and the girls got suspended and got in so much trouble but they had to learn there lesson when they got back from the suspension they agreed to go to school and not skip but the mom was not believing them so she went to school everyday and made sure that they were in school she would sit out side of the school and would see if they would come out but they were sticking to there agreement and did not leave the building of the school it was almost the end of the school year and for the end of the school year they give gifts but the girls forgot there gift for the people they got so they left school and went to the store down the street of the school but this time her mom was not out side so they did not have to sneak out of the school they found out that Mackenzie's mother passed away from cancer......No one knew that she had cancer and they found out she had cancer because of her step dad who picked them up and told them what happened after he took her to the hospital and found out she was dying but they told her all the things then they tested Mackenzie's blood to see if she has cancer and when they got the news it was shocking. The test result shows that Mackenzie has cancer so the bad thing is that her hair was falling out but she did not tell anyone because she thought it was what she was doing which was putting products in her hair all the time but she was so sad.Meanwhile Riley comforted her and made sure she was not stressed and made sure was okay and that she was happy and not sad because it can get worse and she was so sad but i had to make her feel okay .After a week has gone by the step dad decided to leave them a note and leave he left them a car and money so they can pay for the rent of the house the note says ..........

    I Believe You

    By: Hannah Cairns

I messed up and I still don't know why I did it in the first place. She didn't deserve what she got. Alisa was a good person, and I am not. I am a horrible person who deserves ten times worse than what she's going through.

I look at her in that bed with that tube down her throat and I want to die. I wish that I was in that bed instead of her. There aren't many people in this world like her, she was caring and wanted to make an impact in this world.

        ?Im sorry Alisa.?

    Two weeks ago?

?Hey Alora,? my best friend Brea said while walking into my bedroom.

?Hey,? I said while blowing out smoke and putting my cigarette out.

?We got invited to a party at Levis house.?

?When?? I was a little shocked because Levi hated us.

?For tonight. Do you want to go??

?Sure, but why is Levi inviting us??

?Well he didn't, his friend did. Plus so many people will be there he probably won't even notice us.?

        ?Okay.?

Me and Brea have been going to so many parties lately that I don't even know what day of the week it is right now. I was never really into the party scene until I met Brea.

        ?Let's get ready.?

    Later that night?

When I walked in I could tell that Brea wasn't kidding, there are like a million people here. It smells like weed, tabaco, and puke. Brea walked straight in like she owned the place. I was the opposite, I'm the type to be in the corner of a party smoking by myself, I know, depressing.

I go over to the pot heads and start smoking. As I watched Brea flirting with a hundred different guys, someone came through the door. Most people were too busy smoking, drinking, and kissing to notice. But me, Brea, and a few of our friends noticed and were surprised, it was Alisa.

Alisa went straight up to Brea and slapped her. I was too shocked to do anything at that moment. Alisa wasn't the type to fight back. I say fight back because Brea, I, and a few other girls have been treating her like crap for years. And she has never fought back.

Brea was as shocked as I was and just looked at her for a second, then they just started fighting. I got up but I was so high I could barely walk in a straight line. Half the people in this room noticed, and the other half were too busy partying. Me and Brea were the type that would do anything for eachother. I got into the fight and started hitting Alisa. I finally stopped, then she got up and ran.

When I got up I realized that I was bleeding all over my clothes. I was confused because of how much I was bleeding, then I realized that she cut me with a knife and everything was blurry after that.

    Next day?

I opened my eyes and I had a huge headache. I turned my head and saw Brea and my mom. Immediately I could tell that I was in a hospital. My mom looked like she was going to cry but also punch me.

?What happened,? I said in a whisper.

?I'm going to find something to eat,? my mom said as she walked out of the room.

?Alora, Alisa cut you and you lost a lot of blood. They weren't sure when you would wake up but the doctors said that you should be fine.?

I wasn't sure on how to respond. I just felt so tired that I just fell back asleep.

    A few days later?

I finally got to go home. Brea spent every night with me in the hospital and she spent the night at my house last night too. I woke up while Brea was still sleeping, I just stared at the ceiling and thought. I was so pissed off at Alisa for doing that to me. All I felt was rage.

Brea woke up and saw my face and could tell that I was pissed.

        ?Are you okay??

        ?I'm pissed at Alisa.?

?Me too, but I think I know how to get back at her.?

        ?How??

She didn't answer. She just got up and started getting dressed.

        ?Ready for school??

I got up and got dressed with her. Then we headed downstairs. My mom just looked at us. I could tell that she still didn't know what to say or ask. I can tell how disappointed in me she is. She hates the people I hang around and how much I smoke, but she knows that there is nothing she can do to stop me.

I live pretty close to school so we just walk there. When we get there I see some of our friends. Brea and them seem like they are hiding something from me. They are all weirdly silent. Then the bell rang and we all went to class. I was just praying that I didn't run into Alisa because I felt so mad that I would have tackled her. Next thing you know it was lunch. I went to the cafeteria and I didn't see Brea or any of the others. So I went around to try to find them, but I couldn't find them anywhere. Then I stopped in the bathroom. I was about to go into a stall but I heard someone crying in the corner of the bathroom, it was Alisa.

She looked like she got the hell beat out of her and I immediately knew who did it. I was mad but I didn't think I was this mad. She looked like she was about to die. I didn't want her to die. I was going to get someone but then I thought that everyone would believe that I did this. It would make sense in everyone's head. She didn't say anything to me, she just looked at me with her broken eyes.

?You fell down the stairs, no one did this to you,? I said to her.

She was so scared and broken that all she did was nod.

I left the bathroom feeling afraid. For her and me. I decided I would skip the rest of school. Brea kept calling but I couldn't answer. I just went to the alley where I usually smoke. I didn't smoke, I just sat there lost in my thoughts. Then I tried to figure out when this whole war started between us and Alisa. We used to be friends until I met Brea and one day she just turned on her. Brea liked her one day then totally froze her out the next.

I never really questioned it, I'm not sure on why, but now I am. I started getting mad again but this time at Brea. I decided to straight up ask her. I could hear the bell that meant school was out so I went to find Brea.

?Hey, where have you been Alora?? she asked.

        ?Why do you hate Alisa??

        ?What??

?We all used to be friends, why did you cut her out and start bullying her??

She looked at me for a second, she looked mad, ?I am not the only one that bullied her, don't act so innocent.?

I know that she was right, I'm in no way innocent.

?Why do you hate her, Brea.?

    ?Why do you??

When she said that I felt awful. Why did I hate her? Just because Brea did? Am I really that shallow.

I just turned around and decided to talk to Alisa. When I turned around I saw her being loaded into an ambulance. I decided to walk to the hospital, it took a while but I made it.

?Hi, is Alisa Lee here?? I asked the front desk at the hospital.

?Room twenty two,? she said, not even looking up.

It took a minute but I found the room. It didn't look like anyone was in there, so I walked in. She looked so broken. When she saw me she looked terrified.

?I told them I fell,? she said with a terrified voice.

?That's not what i'm here for.?

?Then why? Want to have your turn.?

    ?Why does Brea hate you??

She looked at me with a shocked look. Like she was so happy that I finally asked her that question.

    ?Why??

?I never asked,? I said while sitting down on the bed near her feet.

She looked like she wanted to answer but couldn't find the words.

?I used to love Brea, more than a friend. And when I told her, we had sex, then the next day she hated my guts and got everyone to turn against me.?

I was shocked when I heard that. I never looked at Brea like that. I wasn't sure what to say. So we just sat there for what felt like an eternity.

?You don't believe me?? the words were a question, but it came out like a statement.

I couldn't answer so I just left. Did I really spend years bullying someone only because they loved someone?

    Truth?

Days passed. I stayed home from school and didn't answer Brea. Then she finally decided to come over.

?Get out,? I said right when she walked through my door.

    ?What is your problem??

?Have we spent years bullying someone just because you're too afraid to admit that you're gay??

?I said while I stood up and got in her face.?

?Oh, who told you that?? she said in a sarcastic tone.

?Give me a reason then. Give me a reason on why you turned on her.?

    ?Because she's a bitch!?

?That's not good enough! No one deserves to go through what we put her through! I don't even understand why I stood by you for all of these years! Get out!?

I could tell that she wasn't sure what to say, so she just stomped out pissed off. I decided to go to school today, I decided I would talk to Brea again. I heard she went back to school a few days ago.

When I got to school I was being stared at and I could tell why. They think I did this to Alisa. It makes sense why they think that, I would think the same thing. When I walked in I planned to go find her, but before I could a teacher stopped me and brought me to the principal's office.

?Hello Alora,? she said while walking in.

    ?Hi.?

?So, there have been rumors going around about you and Alisa.?

    ?I know.?

?Did she put you in the hospital??

?No,? I said straight away. I deserve to be in trouble, not her.

?Did you put her in the hospital the first time??

?Wait, what do you mean the first time??

?She was admitted to the hospital this morning for attempted suicide.?

I couldn't say anything. I sat there for a second then bulleted out. I ran as fast as humanly possible to the hospital.

There was no one at the front desk so I just went in looking everywhere for her. Then I saw her on a bed being rolled into a room. I followed and asked the doctor what happened. I was surprised that he even told me, I thought doctors weren't allowed to give out information unless you're family.

?She took a lot of pills. We aren't sure if she is going to wake up,? he said then just left the room.

I saw her lying there with the tube breathing for her. I sat on the bed and just looked at her. I just kept thinking that she didn't deserve this. I sat there just looking at her for at least an hour. Then I got up and said?

?I believe you,? when I said that her eyes opened

I'm sorry that i have to leave but i can not deal with all of this i know you are going through a tough time but i left you guys a car to get around and i also am gonna be paying the rent when it is due so you don't have to worry about it good luck .sincerely your stepdad . The girls had a talked about everything and decided that they where gonna stay with friends for a few days and come back but they made plans that they were gonna hang out because of the cancer situation so Riley was a little upset with her because they had already made plans so she told her that they can do things during the day and at night they will stay at friends for now and after Mackenzie gets a random phone she does not answer so they leave her a voice mail and when she listens to it she starts crying and says its her dad he heard about the accident with her mom and was just trying to be their for her and at least try to be a good father after he gets loser with her and tells her the truth of why he never was around after her birth and says that her mother told him after the birth he was not able to the baby because she did not think he was ready so she just told him that it was not a good idea to be around and Mackenzie told it was fine she just needs him to be their for her so she and her dad went places to hang out and eat and talked about how she was growing up and she told him the bad news that she got from the hospital which was that she also has cancer does not know how long she will make it but he said that she does not have to worry about it because he will try to pay to get treatments done and buy things for her to get better and he says just in case they will do different fun things everyday until that time and try to bring along her best friend Riley to have fun and spend time with them

Before the sun rises, Natalia bathes in the dark with cold water. She dresses in silence. All her clothes are plain-black pants and blouses, grey turtlenecks in the winter. Her father buys her clothes. Natalia has no time to pick them out herself.

She doesn't mind. She and her father are, after all, still in mourning. And this way, she can dress in the dark without risking a fashion disaster.

Today, however, she left her clothes out hanging on the wardrobe door. Today she wants to wear a dress.

Natalia gets ready and does her chores in the dark, with her eyes closed. She started to pretend she was was blind when she was five, maybe a week after her mother died and her father lost his eyesight in the fire. She can find her way around now, almost as well as the legally blind. At least in her house. She does it better than her father, who almost never leaves the study.

So. She puts her room in order, first. Then she folds the clothes she left in a pile last night and washes the dishes from her father's dinner-he always goes to sleep so late. Lastly, as the sun starts to rise gray behind her eyelids, she makes omelettes for breakfast.

Natalia opens her eyes to use the stove. She left the stove on once, when she was five. She'd gone down in the middle of the night to warm some milk for herself. She left it there by accident, and it boiled over. Her mother was upstairs. When her father arrived home late and turned on the hallway light, the house exploded. Natalia still isn't sure how she survived.

So Natalia always opens her eyes to use the stove.

Her father pads downstairs, waving his cane. Natalia kisses him goodbye before skipping out the door.

The school day seems to crawl by. Natalia does her best to focus only on her studies, not on her classmates or her friends, and definitely not on the tall new boy with the wide, toothy grin sitting two seats behind her.

Recess finally rolls around, and Gino-because that's his name, the new boy's name-takes her hand as soon as the bell rings, like he's been waiting three periods to do it.

    Natalia grins.

They walk together to the benches outside the lunch room, their linked hands swinging between them. Natalia left her red hair loose for him today, just as she wears her knee-length dress.

Yesterday, Gino asked her to be his girlfriend. Natalia said yes; she hasn't said a word to her father about it.

?You don't have time for a boyfriend, Natalia.? He would say. ?Focus on your studies, then come home to your chores. There's too much to do.?

It's true. Since her mother died, Natalia has to do everything she left behind-it's only fair.

But Natalia will make the time. She'll see her boyfriend during recess. Gino seems ok with it.

?Why do you always wear black?? Gino asks, tugging on her dress sleeve.

Natalia lives in a small town-she's never had to explain herself to anyone, they all know what happened. She's surprised to find she doesn't want to answer Gino's question.

No, that's not true. She does want to answer his question. She wants to lie to him.

?I'm inspired by you.? She deadpans.

Gino laughs. He kisses her, and sparks run down Natalia's skin.

That's the thing about Gino-everything makes him laugh, even the things he takes seriously. And she likes the way he kisses her. Other boys have tried to kiss Natalia, hesitant boys or eager, pushy boys. She never liked the idea.

But Gino's kisses are like lightning. There and gone like a really, really good secret.

    ?Tell me the truth, Talia.?

Talia. No one calls her that but him.

?That is the truth.? She swats his hand away, the one still fiddling with her sleeve. ?Just not the answer to your question.?

?You look good in black.? He says-a compliment for a compliment, that's the game they play. He's good at it, too. He's never let a single of her compliments fly by unanswered, and his are always crazy original, are always about her.

So Natalia tries every day to find more things she likes about Gino. She's going to be as good as he is at this game; better, if she can.

    ?I know.? She smiles.

Gino wiggles his eyebrows. ?You're not going to tell me, are you.?

?Not today, boyfriend.? She laughs, and swings their linked hands again.

After school she goes straight home, washes dishes, makes lunch, washes again, sweeps, mops, and cleans the windows, because it's Monday. Then she settles down to homework, but Gino stays in her mind, like an annoying little firefly on a still, dark night.

She stays up with her father for a while, tells him about her day while he smiles and takes tea.

?Are you sure you don't want to go back to work, father??

Her father had made a fortune when he was young, but he enjoyed working in the coffee shop by the public library, so that's what he had done-until the fire.

The owner of the coffee shop, Calpurnia, had expressly asked Natalia to persuade her father to return.

?I miss his humor. My new boy is wonderful, but he's rather quiet.? She elbowed Gino and winked at Natalia; because Gino works in Calpurnia's shop. And she can see him every time she buys coffee for her father.

?No, thank you, Natalia. I'm quite happy where I am.? Her father lied pleasantly. ?Besides, I would drop and spill everything, likely-bump into everyone. Calpurnia would be upset with me.?

?She would not.? Natalia laughs. ?Father-? she hesitates. Then she bites her lip and says it anyway. ?Calpurnia thinks you're ?quite the gentleman'. ?

Natalia's father stiffens. Then he laughs nervously and says. ?I hear there's a new boy in your school; a young man from the city.? her father raised an eyebrow. ?What's he like??

?I wouldn't know.? Natalia hears herself say. She stands up and takes the empty cup from her father. ?His name is Gino...? she looks at his milky eyes, at the sad, serious lines on his face. She can't tell him; he'll hate it, he's just too old-fashioned. He'll think she's irresponsible, too young to date and kiss boys and be away from home. He'll feel lonely.

?He doesn't talk much.? She kisses her father's cheek and turns out the lights. ?Good night, father.?

    Who is the Guilty Party?

Everyone in class just looked down at their shoes when Ms. Granger stood in front of them looking as angry as they had ever seen her.

?Okay, I want to know who did it and I want to know right now. If no one will tell me then you will all get detention.?

    Samantha Jones lifted her hand.

?Yes, Samantha, what is it?  Are you ready to confess or tell me who did it??

?It isn't fair that we all get detention for something we didn't do.?

?Perhaps, you are right, Samantha, but this is a heinous act and the perpetrator must be punished.?

    Amil lifted his hand up.

    ?Yes, Amil what is it??

?I know what both heinous and perpetrator mean. I have been studying my word power list.?

    She smiled.

?That is good of you, Amil.?

?Do you know why I have been studying my word power list??

?Because you need to improve your vocabulary??

?Yes, you are right. It is also because my favourite teacher suggested I do so and I trust her.?

He smiled at her and she smiled back.

    ?I did it.?

Everyone turned around and stared at Almara.  She was a tall girl, taller than all of the boys and rather beautiful.

Ms. Granger looked at her and shook the blond curly hair back and forth.

?No, you didn't and whom are you trying to cover up for??

?I did it. I confess that I did it. It was me. Now punish me and let the others out of detention.?

?Almara, you are one of the sweetest girls that I know.  When you first came to me you could barely read or write English and now you are one of the top students in the entire school.?

?Yes, and it is because of you pushing me. Well, let us say nudging very hard that I was able to attain the position that I now currently occupy.?

?You didn't do it did you, Almara??

She hung her head down and shrugged her shoulders.

?No, Ms. Granger, I did nothing wrong.?

?That is what I thought and never gain will you take blame for something you didn't do. I want everyone to learn that lesson because it is a life lesson. You never accept culpability for something that you are no guilty of no matter the circumstances.?

?I know what culpability means,? Amil smiled.

?I think there should be a reward for ratting out the person.?

Jowell was a pretty, brunette girl with very strong, dark eyes. They were even hypnotizing.

?Okay, the first one that rats out ? I'm sorry, I don't like that word. How about we come up with a different word??

?I like the word jabber.? Amil looked around for approval. ?I will use it in a sentence. We were in class and Ms. Granger wanted to know who did the deed and strongly suggested someone jabber the name of the guilty party.?

?Very good, Amil,? smiled Ms. Granger. ?I think I have created a word power monster.?

    Everyone laughed.

?See this is what we love about you Ms Granger, you are such a character. You always know how to make us laugh.?

?I am vocabulary monster and my insatiable appetite are words.  I am so good.? Amil was very proud of himself.

    Everyone laughed.

    Ms. Granger sighed.

    ?I did it.?

Tommy McCann was a tall boy with long, stringy blond hair and a chip on his shoulder.  He had been disruptive in every teacher's class except Ms. Granger's room.

Ms. Granger didn't say anything at first.

?I would be shocked if it was you, Tommy.?

    ?You would??

?Yes, I would because I was pretty sure that you went down the straight and narrow path.?

    ?Well, I guess I regressed.?

He smiled and made a face at Amil.

?Actually, while regress is a word that might fit the situation, I think-

?Amil, enough already,? cautioned Ms. Granger.

    Jowell shook her head.

?What I can't understand is what was the heinous crime??

?Yes, no one told us exactly what happened. Maybe, if we knew then it would help us determine the character that committed the crime.?  Almara flashed her beautiful smile.

    ?Somebody keyed the principal's car.?

Almara looked around and shook her head.

?That isn't right because a bunch of us walk to school with Mr. Harris. He doesn't use a car.?

    Ms. Granger straightened out.

?Okay, maybe I was misinformed. I heard that someone wrote horrible graffiti on the bathroom wall that implicated a few people in a horrible crime.?

    Jowell shook her head.

?I haven't heard anything of the sort and I am the queen of gossip in this school. You need to try again.?

The students looked at each other a little puzzled.

?Someone broke into the teacher's private supply of goods and stole stuff.? She nodded her head affirmatively.

?How do you know a student did it?? Jowell looked at the teacher.

?Why would a teacher break into the closet when they already have the key?? Ms. Granger looked at everyone.

?Whoever broke into it has to have a knowledge of those types of locks.? Tommy smiled.

    ?This is true.?

?Also, whoever did it what was stolen?? Jowell smiled.

?I believe that supplies were stolen.?

?What kind of supplies??  Almara looked at the teacher.

    ?I am not sure.?

?Okay, so someone broke into the teacher's private stash of school supplies.  Whoever did it, knew how to work that lock which isn't easy. I know, because I've picked my fair share of locks. There is also the fact that if they stole supplies then they had to hide them somewhere or sell them or get rid of whatever they ripped off.? Tommy grinned.

?I think it was an inside job.?  Jowell looked around the room.

    ?Maybe, it was a teacher??

?No, we've already stated that a teacher wouldn't do that because they have a key. Why would they break into the room when they don't have to?? Ms. Granger looked at everyone.

Tommy smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

?I think the person that did it is a real character. I mean not someone that is necessarily bad, but someone that is very bright, conniving in a positive way and has a good heart.?

?I think Tommy is absolutely right. The character who would pull this off didn't do it for selfish reasons. They did it in order to prove a point.?

?You know, Almara, I think you are one hundred percent right.  There aren't any real bad ass characters in this school. At least not bad ass enough to break into the supply room in broad daylight and risk getting caught.?  Jowell smiled.

?Especially now that Ms. Granger has straightened out, Tommy.?

    Everyone laughed.

?I guess she has a point,? admitted Tommy.

?Well, whoever did it, need to be punished properly.?

?So what is your punishment going to be, Ms. Granger??

?Excuse me, I have no idea what you are talking about??

    Almara looked at everyone.

?First of all, you messed up when you threatened to give us all detention. You don't operate that way.?

?Almara is right.? Jowell looked at Ms. Granger.

?And, besides, there is no one that could pick that lock aside from me.  You see, after I picked the lock last time, they changed them all and the principal had me try and I told him that I couldn't.? Tommy looked at Ms. Granger.

?I believe that you are culpable, Ms. Granger.?

?Okay, so maybe I did it.?

?You had a driving force or reason why you would do it. Are you going to share??

?Yes, I will because there is a reason why I committed the deed. I had a very bad student years ago. He would make Tommy look like a choir boy when Tommy was at his worse. I tried to straighten him up, but I failed as a teacher, as a human being. Last weekend, I read where he was shot dead robbing a convenience store?

?So you pulled this fake break into the teacher's private stash in order to drive home the point that stealing is wrong??

?I did. I didn't want to fail again.?

?You did not fail that boy, Ms. Granger.  The boy failed you.?  Almara looked at her coldly and determined.

?Almara is absolutely correct,? said Jowell.

?I could use many words to support the two ladies, but I think everyone can come up with their own.?  Amil smiled.

?Okay, lesson learnt. I never want any of you to throw your life away like that. It was a useless waste of human light. This boy had talent; he was a very good artist. But he fell in with the wrong group and did drugs.?

?So nobody is getting a detention??

?Unless, Ms. Granger gets a detention??

?No, Tommy, I am not going to get a detention.  Mr. Harris knows what I did and why I did it. Nothing was stolen.?

?Ms. Granger, you just love your students too much. This is the only thing you are guilty of.?  Almara smiled and stood up. She walked to the teacher and hugged her.

?I am not allowed to hug anyone.?

They all stood up and took turns hugging her.

?It will be our little crime and secret,? said Jowell.

They all laughed and Ms. Granger wiped the tears from her eyes.

?So you all thought I was guilty??

    Everyone nodded their heads.

?Well, it looks like I received a bunch of free hugs. Because I didn't do it.?

They all looked at her very skeptical.

?First, I would never do anything like that. And, second, well I don't have a second.?

    ?That's fine, Ms. Granger.?

?Okay, now that that little drama is out of the way, we can continue with our lessons.?
